Whats better car, front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

Front wheel drive gives you more control and is considered safer.
Whats better car, front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?
Front wheel drive gives better traction in snow but unless you rotate all 4 tires....you will wear them out fast! This is because the front tires bear the weight of the engine, plus the torque of the motor..and they have to steer the car which tends to wear them out faster.

Rear wheel drive is best for tire life and handling. It's a no brainer where I live (snow belt) so I drive a front wheel drive!
Whats better car, front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?
cheap cars are front wheel drive and the more expensive are usually rear drive, like BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Corvette and Mustang....
Reply:FWD

-Cheaper to fix

-Easier to work on.

-Much safer in rain and snow.

-Better gas mileage.

-Lighter.

RWD

-Impossible to drive on snow.

-Slippery in rain.

-bad on gas.

-More expensive.
Reply:Rear is better. Front wheel drive has many engineering compromises that must be made. Just packaging the drive, brakes, steering, and suspension inside the front tires creates huge problems for the suspension geometry and unsprung weight. These are problems that you can't solve. You just live with the mediocrity that results.

The only reason front wheel drive is used, ever, is that it results in packaging the car better. You can get more interior space in a smaller, more fuel efficient car that way.

If you look at the history of necessary fuel economy, then you'll see the history of front wheel drive right there with it. front wheel drive cars just poured out of the bankrupt post-war european manufacturers. The people had been made destitute by the war. In the US, they were only built to help manufacturers meet CAFE. Before CAFE, we didn't have them.

It is true that front wheel drive cars are handy in snow. It is not true that they were ever built for that purpose. You won't find any example of a FWD car that was built specifically for winter use when there was no need for economy.

In spite of what I think there are FWD luxury cars. The Olds Toronado, its brother the Eldorado, and the 1930's Cords were FWD luxury cars. These weren't built for performance. I really don't know what E. L. Cord was thinking, but I do know what GM was thinking. They were thinking that they'd like to build a car with a flat floor. That is well-documented. In fact, they built the 1961-62 Pontiac Tempest with a crooked driveshaft, and the Corvairs with a rear engine, for the same reason.

Technically, all those flat-floor GM cars were not impressive, but the Toronado was really awful. It would wear out a set of tires in 10,000 miles easily (been there, had one, got t-shirt). The handling was absolutely criminal, but in those days you expected that.
