Is any kind of Porsche's 944 illegal?
No.

The Porsche 944 is legal everywhere and was sold almost everywhere.

Their are two possible issues you will face in terms of legality (ie, can the car be registered and used on public roads):

1) The car was originally produced for another country and was brought into the US as a grey market import (cars imported by Porsche dealers are the US version, and account for probably 99% of 944s in this country, if not more).

2) California cars... I don't think there were ever two US versions of any 944s; in the 70s, some Porsches were sold with a CA Option to reflect the different emissions standards for California; however by the 1980s all Porsches destined for the US were built to CA Emissions standards. However, cars that were not sold in CA will have to go through some extra hoops if brought in and registered in CA. A 944 should have no problem passing these tests, but if there are any problems, it can become quite a headache.

As smog regulation has increased in many states, it is possible you might find this situation elsewhere, though CA is the only state that can set it's own emissions standards. In any case, if you are buying a car that is already registered in the state where you will be operating it, then the car is legal.
Reply:So what's the real story behind all 3 of the same question asked different ways?

Recap: Yes it's legal
