My 1987 Nissan 300zx will not start! HELP!?
I have cleaned the mass air flow meter and it wasnt it, it shakes really bad in idle, and now it wont start at all. I dont know what to do, and I really want to drive my car!!
please help!

You need to know how to work on a car if you own a 1987 vehicle.
More then likely you have a leaky injector. At first the injector only leaked enough to cause the car to miss and shake. Now one of the cylinders has so much fuel in it and the spark plugs are covered in fuel that it will not start.
Check your plugs. Dry them off. Get it running. Check each cylinder by unplugging the wire. When the car runs the same with a cylinder unhooked then you know you have found the bad one. Replace the injector and o-rings.
....or take it somewhere.

However, the 944 was most definitely produced in a US version. If you are in the United States, pretty much all 944s you will find will be US versions... and the few grey market cars will also be road legal in the US. If you are in another country, you will only have the RoW version, but this would be the version that would be legal in that country.

its very common for the main relay that controls the fuel pump and ignition on that car to fail in hot weather. the main relay is located up under the driver's side of the instrument panel. it gets a lot of heat from the sunlight coming through the windshield and heating the dash panel. that causes the circuit board in the relay to expand and break contact. when that happens the relay goes open circuit and the fuel pump won't run or you'll lose spark to the spark plugs. (the main relay is actually two relays in one and depending on where the circuit board for the relay cracks you'll lose one or the other)
there is almost a 100% failure rate on the original relays. if you've never replaced it, then I think you'll find the main relay to be the problem. the relays run about $45 at a honda dealer; you can probably replace it yourself if you're comfortable working under the dash. otherwise, add $ for installation.

Cold air intake for 98 Volvo s70 t5?
I have a 98 t5 and I want to put a cold air intake on it. But I don't see anyplace where I can route it with out having it routed under the suport beam for the motor. I have a 3in inner diameter 3 1/2in outer diameter pipe that I'm running. Can anybody help? I don't mind doing some minor cutting. I don't have the tools or the knowledge to weld anything so it can't be any major moddifications. I just need a pic or something showing where the intake is placed. Another sub question. Their is another hose that connects to the origanal air box. I don't know if it sucks or blows air. Now that hose connect to something that kind of resembles a turbo but I don't think that the turbo can be that small on it. Well Thank you for your time. NEED HELP.

It is more of a "look at me" type car than a "let's go off roading" type thing. If you have and are willing to pay the huge cost for the car, gas, lack of space, and, above all, insurance, and really want one, then go ahead. But otherwise, go for something smaller; something that makes more sense in today's world of high fuel prices.

I have read that 2005 RSX Type S got Cams,Exhaust and Throttle body bore!!!! Made 10 more horsepower and 2lbs torque only in that YEAR!! Then Revised back to 201 horses in 2006. Why only ONE YEAR?? Efficiency? What other changes or differences from 2005-2006.

I'm almost positive that the 92 civics used parallel condensors. the serpentine was used on the accords. look on the side of the condensor. if you see overlapping loops of tubing on the side where then enter and exit the condensor fins then they are in parallel. I'm pretty sure yours is a parallel condensor.

The main purpose of break-in is to seat the compression rings to the cylinder walls. We are talking about the physical mating of the engine's piston rings to it's corresponding cylinder wall. That is, we want to physically wear the new piston rings into the cylinder wall until a compatible seal between the two is achieved.
Proper engine break in will produce an engine that achieves maximum power output with the least amount of oil consumption due to the fact that the piston rings have seated properly to the cylinder wall. When the piston rings are broken in or seated, they do not allow combustion gases to escape the combustion chamber past the piston rings into the crankcase section of the engine. This lack of "blow-by" keeps your engine running cleaner and cooler by preventing hot combustion gases and by-products from entering the crankcase section of the engine. depends upon the engine but most are 3.0 12 valve and requires removal of battery terminals...

'88 honda Accord stalled out in flooded street?
My 1988 honda accord stalled out on saturday trying to ford a flooded street. I have been back to get it going since the weather has dried up a bit, but it wont start. when I try to turn it over it only makes a clicking noise similar to a dead battery, but all the electrical stuff seems to work, and jumping it didn't help any. I need to replace the distributor cap on the car, but is there anything else that might be causing this problem?

If you have an Accord LXi, I'd say the starter or distributor is your problem. If it's any other trim level, it could be the carburetor. Regardless of what it could be, I still think it's your starter or distributor. If you are talking about the front end, not inside the axle tubes themselves, you have to replace the whole units. They are called uni-bearings... being all one "internal" piece. Last time I checked they run you about $140-$160 per side.

You'll need to ask what the hub lock nut size is though, mine was 35mm, a piece that I didn't have already. Plan on taking about 2 or 3 hours to do it all, depending on how hard it is to get your bolts off (3 on each side) plus the brakes, rotors and other crap that's in the way.

It depends on what other cars you're talking about. If you're talking about a Daewoo vs. Saab, the Saab is going to feel like a million bucks with crisp handling and mind-blowing turbo'ed acceleration. Coming from a higher end Audi or BMW it might feel a little less impressive. I like mine because it gets decent fuel economy, has a bunch of power if you really want it, and it's comfortable to drive. A lot of the controls are pretty intuitive. I really like the simple radio controls on the steering wheel. The automatic transmission is surprisingly responsive. The seats are great, I can find a comfy position easily and the instruments are easy to read. You don't need premium fuel, and you get tons of cargo space. My suspension is a bit worn with the mileage I have but when they're up to snuff they handle very well.

WHERE DID I SAY I DIDN'T LIKE MY SAAB!? I'm pretty sure the only thing I said was that the suspension was tired but that's expected after friggin' 180k miles! It's broken down once in the 2 and a half years I've owned it and that was because of the CPS. I've recently put over $3k into maintaining my Saab because I like it so much and want to keep it. When this car finally does give up the ghost I will surely be purchasing another.

The fuel I feed my Aero is premium (93 octane for my 310hp engine, upgraded with a Hirsch chip mod) and before the mod, it was still pretty darn fast. My parents both drive MBs and I have an AMG of my own. Of course it's faster than my Saab but I never felt any lamentations when I drove my Saab around college and still beat everyone who tried to outpace me. The ride is VERY smooth and when people get too comfortable, just give it half throttle and you'll wake them right back up.
There's also nothing like the reaction of someone who sits in a Saab for the first time and does a double take at the ignition location and that ultra-nifty cup holder.
I have never had anything more than a problem with Saab's notoriously weak batteries. The drive has always been flawless, my suspension has never indicated any weak spots, the engine purrs beautifully, and I can't imagine how someone could destroy their Saab so badly that it breaks down. In fact, I've never seen a car break down in my life. I'm 25.
The reason I chose a Saab was because my parents had MBs. From the day I turned 16, right through two new 9-5s (one V6 HOTurbo and the new Aero), I've always said this: "The Mercedes seats push you away. The SAAB seats hug you back." They are incredibly comfortable.
Edit: a year ago I was involved in an accident that elicited responses suggesting that I was supposed to be on a gurney in an ambulance, not picking up large shards of glass from the middle of the road and attending to the responsible car's driver and damage. A few months later, black ice and an S-shaped exit ramp resulted in $6800 worth of damage (two quarter panels, new xenon headlamp unit, front fender, two new wheels, a new belt inside, and a dozen other things). I didn't even know I had more than a bump based on the impact until I got out and nearly fell on my A$$ when I saw the gaping hole where my front right corner used to exist.

The AMG was rear ended by a GMC Envoy going 40 mph towards a red light. The brake pedal was not depressed enough to stop my car from being gently launched into the vehicle ahead. The damage was $8,000 for two custom bumpers and paint.

Anyhow, I have driven and worked for both AUDI and BMW, I am with the SAAB brand now since 1994. I am in to my 5th personally owned SAAB, all AERO models and I find it to be the best car for the money SAAB asks. You feel safe and are in control with road hugging suspension and almost all the perks. Extra power is always available as and when you need it.Compared to other cars the only difference is that SAAB is FWD and AUDI/BMW are RWD. The front suspension, links and arms are very strongly built and you hardly hear a squeek. Safety is top notch. I drive regularly over 200 KPH and always feel safe that of something happens I will survive unlike in most beamers and audis except the very latest ones costing 10 grand more than a saab. I love these cars.

Saab had a couple recalls on the engine parts and they replaced them for free.
I like the Turbo on it, it does give a boost when you use it.
Besides it depreciates in value so fast, I really enjoyed my Saab, and I plan to drive it until I can't affort to maintain it anymore =)

if you just unplug it for whatever reason then plug it back in you shouldn't need to reprogram it but if for some reason it does need to be reprogramed then the dealership is the only place that can do it you need a gm specific computer to do it that dealerships only have as far as I know

Reply:If you only want 7-8 PSI of bppst, all you need to do is buy a turbo kit from either Greddy, or Turbonetics. They run about $3,500 and have EVERYTHING you need, including the fuel and timing management. This means you DO NOT have to get it tuned anywhere. And remember a QUALITY turbo kit will run AT LEAST $3,000. anything less than that and you are buying pure GARBAGE! A quality turbo by itself is $900-$2,500. So if you are looking at one of those $500-$800 "kits" send me your money and it will be safer than blowing your motor with that garbage. Look at those people that say "turbo's ruin your car, my motor blew in 2 months, my manifold cracked, blah blah blah." they are the ones who spent $600 on their kit, and now they have no car to drive because of it, GREAT DEAL huh!

So if you are looking at one of those $500-$800 "kits" send me your money and it will be safer than blowing your motor with that garbage. If the fluid looks foamy after a test drive once at operating temp, then you should be concerned, also check the level according to the manufacturers recommendation, and do so with the vehicle on a flat level surface. 250 does not sound excessive to me, I would be concerned if it approaches 300 and over, that trans uses a synthetic type of fluid and should have a high oxidation point, also do not tow or operate in OD while pulling a load or grade.

Your going to spend a lot of money to do this. With the price of the engine and labor a couple thousand dollars is not out of the question. Especially if you buy a rebuilt engine. Your gas mileage will not improve much . You will spend a lot just for a mile or two improvement in gas mileage. Best bet is to just drive as it is as the 4.3 is not a lot more economical to operate.................UJN

Your engine has a computer which will adjust the spark advance to suit the fuel. If you use sub-standard fuel, you won't notice much other than fuel economy will suffer, the engine temps will be higher, and eventually the engine will suffer more internal damage. Octane booters are unlikely to convert regular to premium, unless you use enough to make it not cost effective.
Just use premium, as the manufacturer intended.

Octane boosters may be questionable. While I haven't seen scientific proof to back up the claims, I have heard from several sources that some octane boosters don't really boost octane levels as high as they claim they do.
As noted above, running lower octane fuel than the engine was designed for makes the knock sensor in the engine retard the spark timing which results in lower fuel economy ( thereby erasing some of the savings from buying regular fuel ) and also lowers the power output of the engine ( maybe not be something you would directly notice but it does ). The long-term effects can be more devastating including potential engine damage. If that does happen, don't expect any warranty coverage as the incorrect octane level fuel was used.
My suggestion would be to use premium octane fuel and forget about those octane boosters.

Everytime my gas tank gets to be about half full it usually reads between the half and 1/4 left. It bounces up and down and doesn't seem to give me an accurate reading in order to figure out how much gas I actually have. Does anyone know what may cause this?

Its the same with my 2000 civic Ex. Its normal, Its because of the bouncing or moving that the gas move along too and the sensor is picking up the difference. Once you stop and level out it will tell you the right amount you have.

Power side mirrors on 2002 silverado don't work as they should.?
Both of my power side mirrors of my truck aren't working right, both move to the left only. they don't move up or down, or move right. They only move left, could this be a bad switch. I have tested the side mirror and they are working right. I also looked to see if i could find bad wires but no luck.

My car turns off on occasions especially uphill or when I try to accelerate rapidly. I found out that if i press lightly on the gas many times...it's harder for it to turn off. They also have diagnostic equipment that cost several thousands of dollars. (The latest diag system was around 8G's not including the laptop.)

2003 jeep liberty a/c problem, help!!?
i had my ac on the other day quite a bit, now when i first start my car it makes a loud noise like the air's on, but it's not...it then quiets down after a few minutes....and when i have the fan set on the lowest setting it doesn't blow air out, i don't know if that has anything to do with it or not....please help!!!

A knock could be a valve or rod knocking. There are quite a few other things that could be a factor too. Get it to a mechanic pretty quick as it could be serious and pretty expensive if you wait too long!

2002 Dodge Stratus Problem?
When we turn on the fan it squeals really loudly. Like a real high pitched whine that does not seem to go away. Does this man the fan needs lubricated, new belt, or what. Any direction on how I may fix this would be nice. It still works it is just really annoying.

I'm assuming you mean the blower motor and if it's loud like that it means you must replace it.It's not really hard to replace and it's done via under the hood and a few screws.

My father is 6'8 and weighs about 260 and he has driven a VW since the sixties. He liked it a lot better than his Honda!! My Corvette is a close second for him :) VWs have a lot more room than you'd think! When I test drove mine, I took a LARGE friend with me---about six foot, almost three hundred pounds. He not only had enough room, he made a big production about climbing into the back seat WHILE I was driving LOL Yeah. lots of room.
Also another thing to remember---it isn't just height or weight. I'm five and a half feet tall, but I have short legs, so I have trouble driving my 79 vette because the seat sits back so far and cannot be adjusted. So, it isn't just how tall, but its how you are proportioned. My 1998 and 2000 Vette, I can reach the pedals if I scoooooot the seat all the way up. In the VW I sit comfortably at my height , short legs and all. It all depends on where your length is and how it is proportioned :) Test drive one and see.

Ford, 2000 Taurus Wagon. Door open light is on do too the back hatch not tripping switch, where is switch?
Some times the rear switch makes contact.. sometimes it doesn't so the doors don't auto lock and the "Red" dash light emblym is on showing an open door... so I figure I would just jump the switch and put the thing out of its missery, However; I can't seem to find the switch... you know usually like in the door they are a springloaded little guy in the corner... but I have looked all over around the rear door hatch and don't find an obvious switch... so possibly part of the gate mechanizm inside the tail gate?
I sprayed some white lithiom grease on the rear latch mechanizm and re-attached the door seal with silicone and hoping that take's care of the problem that is preventing what ever from not making contact... but if not I want to find the switch, rip it's little wires out and tie them together so the doors will auto lock when put into drive.
Any ideas?

The switch is actually in the locking mechanism. Before you start tovtear apart the hatch, try this quick fix. Grab a can of lubricant, WD40, or something that has a penetrant. Spray into the latch and operate hatch. Close and open it several times and reapply the penetrant. This should help keep the light from staying on.

i have a 87 mustang gt, and it feels different starting yesterday,
it rumbles more while in i idle if im not stepping on the gas the clutch moves more and the wheel, the rmp needle stay a little below 1, im assuming thats healthy, i put in a new alternator a month ago and a new power steering pump about two weeks ago, i dont think that has anything to do with it, im just stating it just in case it does, its just weird how its rumbles more, if i floor it in neutral the clutch shakes and moves to the right, im not sure if it was doing that before, but yeah its got me concerned so opinons are appreciated thanks

Sounds like the clutch may be slightly engaged even when its pushed in. Try adjusting the clutch cable so that the clutch enguages when the pedal is farther off the floor. Also inspect the motor and transmittion mounts as that could add to the shakeing.

The best thing that I can suggest is, that if you are that concerned about your car, take it to the mechanic and have it looked at.

Since the car has a neutral safety switch, you'll still need to have the clutch engaged when firing it up, if the idle smooths out when you release the clutch, the clutch is your most likely suspect.
The throw-out bearing might also be going away.
I had a friend with a manual transmission Mustang that started to do something like you describe, but for the oddest of reasons. He was known for literally stomping the clutch pedal and the holes where the pedals pivot from were rounding out until his clutch and brake pedals slid in the now-oval anchor points and caused a problem like you describe. Yeah, that's an extreme example, but if it happened once...

EEC IV codes comming up on my 93 mustang?
I took my mustang to oreilys to get the free code scan, Naturally their help was crappy. They gave me the codes yet didnt know WTF they meant. I got a 327 (EGR Valve or exhaust pressure transducer circuit below minimum.) 328 (EGR valve position closed valve voltage lower than expected.) 543 Fuel pump secondary circuit failure battery to control module.) I was needing to know what each one meant and if possible how to fix each problem. Any feedback will be apreciated. Thank you.

543 Fp secondary battery circuit failure means that it saw a loss of Fuel pump power on the monitor back to the PCM if I remember my EEC IV.... Fuel pump, the relay, but sometimes if no problems are happening with the car stalling or anything can be caused when they ran the test... it all depends upon the car.

as for the codes from your OBD setup... i would try (for the EGR valve) to take it off and clean out all the carbon buildup with some brake parts cleaner. put it back on, check to make sure you dont have a vacuum leak coming from it (could be bad hose or diaphram in EGR)
now about the fuel pump problem.... no clue. i would guess your fuel pump relay is going out (trying to anyway) or your fuel pump itself might be giving up the ghost.

could be a few things. First, condenser may be damaged...this can get pricy. Also, you may need a shot of freon in the system. Another thing to check would be the pressure in the cooling system lines.

Normally when this happens, the typical symptom is a loud squeeling sound is heard, extremely similar to a belt noise accompanied by a rough running engine, sometimes stalling. Normally, the repair for this is to replace the cam sensor and synchronizer which costs about $200 to $300. With the timing chain broken, you may as well replace the engine itself, since the engine needs to be removed to replace the chain anyways. To keep costs within reason, you may want to opt to replace it with a REPUTABLE salvage yard engine. This way you have some kind of warranty. Hope this helps.

Personally, I think anything over 16 inches looks tacky on that year civic.
If you are going to keep 15's the correct tire size would be 205/50/15. If you are going to get 16's, 205/45/16 would be the tire size.
And if you do end up getting the 17's 205/40/17 is the tire size. But with 17's you will have more rotational mass which will make the car slower and waste more gas.
They will fit, but you'll have a greater chance of rubbing especially on a lower car.

i have a 1991 chrysler new yorker fifth avenue that won't start. it was running fine and my uncle was looking for a key on wire to wire the fan to because it was not working so it was overheating.anyways so he found a wire hooked in to it and since then the car won't start.i have tried the lock and unlock thing and i have tried replacing the fuel pump. the door locks and horn won't work and it will crank for days but will turn over.

well prices can vary.. i installed and temparally spray painted mine which looks pretty damn good for $10.. but to get installed prob $100, to get painted it would almost cost as much as it would to get your whole car painted so i would just do that for like $700ish

For me, i scratched thee hell outta my front bumper and basically got this guy who restores bumpers for nissan to repaint it all for me. It was like 125 $ =D. But if you go to a body shop to get it painted they gotta order the paint and shiet so it would cost you like 350 - 400 from them. Go to the Nissan dealership, ask for someone who paints the bumpers and restores them (because when people trade in cars, this person's job is to repaint the bumper n make it look all pretty lol) Ask um how much it would cost to paint ur bumper to match your car. Most likely they should already have the paint for your car since it's Nissan. But yeah, good luck there!

VW Jetta Overheating?
I have a 1999 VW Jetta. Within the last several months I've been having a overheating problem. It first began with my temp light going on. I inspected the overflow tank and noticed the water level low. So I added water, the light went off. About two weeks later same thing. One day as I was putting water in the overflow tank I noticed the seal on the overflow tank cap broken. I replaced the cap. That worked for about 1 month. Last week the temp light went off while I was driving. It was almost to the red area. I pulled the car over, waited for the car to cool off then added water. I didn't get more than 1.5 miles and the temp began to rise very quickly. I noticed water under the car when I got home and thought it was just an overflow of water. Now I can't go more than 3miles before the car overheats. The cooling fan does not go on. I also hear a slight hissing coming from the right side of the engine and there's a small of water dripping from the left side. Theres Any suggestions??

Reply:There is a plastic watter outlet, just below the cyl. head at the rear of the engine. I've seen many of these crack. The cracks are not usually visible and it probably won't leak unless it's under pressure. There is probably a lot of grime hiding the crack, too. VW gets about $50 for the part.

Reply:Your last sentence indicates that the fan does not work? If that is the case, then the solution is simple: check fan for power supply, otherwise replace the fan. It looks very much that the efficiency of the fan was dropping slowly over the period, so the water overheats/boils and could blow out most hoses. The purpose of the fan is to extract the heat in the radiator to help keep the engine operating temp with a desired range, normally between 85-95 deg C.
Best to seek help from competent shop if this idea does not work.

The moral of the story is, as soon as you know something's wrong, related to the cooling system, take it to the shop and find out what you're dealing with! The diagnostic fee will be a bummer, a couple hundred usually, but you could be saving yourself from a repair bill in the multi-thousands later.

Overheating could have caused further damage eg to the head cylinder gasket. This means the car will constantly overheat as the cooling system is contaminated by hot gases coming from the engine. Have the pipes etc checked and if that doesnt help, take it into a workshop. Blown gaskets usually come with warped heads and are not cheap to sort out.

i have a 2001 dodge durango 4x4 4.7l v8 i was wondeirng if i get a flowmaster super 40 muffler how much horse power would i get just form that? im planning to change my headers later but for now if i just change my stock muffler to a flowmaster super 40 how much hp will i gain like around 9?

Not sure how much HP you will gain, but there is a chance that the flowmasters will allow the exhaust to flow more freely, giving the engine more "room to breath" but if the engine is tuned to run on some backpressure from the exhaust, it may effect how the engine runs.

I have a pos and i cant seem to get in the steering column to tighten my screws back up. How do i do it?

If you mean your steering column seems to be loose at a point below the "tilt" feature you will have to partially disassemble the column to access the torx screws that attach the base to the column. It is not very fun or easily. You will need to remove the steering wheel, and turn signal switch, a few lock rings, the ignition lock cylinder, then the tilt tension spring, and tilt pivot pins, all the ignition actuator levers, and pull the wiring loose to allow the ignition lock cylinder housing to be moved far enough to access the setscrews that are loose, then without totally disassembling the column you can only get two of the three screws tightened. If you want to do all three you need to pull the entire column out to get the center steering shaft out . It may be better to just find a good used column and swap the ignition lock cylinder ( or find one with a key)

It's worth mentioning, because it is so excellent and well-maintained, not hot rodded, efficient, reliable and should last another 10 years! Oops, I guess you can not contact us unless you see it in Ontario Auto Trader (free online service, no hidden catches) in ONE MONTH. It is highly likely that the Toronto Dealer where she has ordered her new car will jump on it.
All I can say, though we have 80,000 miles and the car is like new, loaded and full of zip and life; (also very hot to look at!) is don't get one with over 30,000 miles. Unmaintained Cavaliers can be a real nuisance, if not discouraging and expensive.

did you mean the vent visors? those things are stick with some kind to adhesive tape very simple to install
if not the vent visors you mean the metal thing that goes around the glass? you cant replace that because that is part of the door
take it to a shop and get it painted again

I'd pick the Edge... I don't like the Venza's styling, they front looks like an Edge combined with a Camry. The Venza also looks more like a minivan (kind of like a Mercedes R Class) and the Edge is all crossover.

04 mercury montery trans wont go in R from drive and is spuratic in low gear when u put it in drive WHY??
It will go in reverse from Park but not from drive and sometimes when you take off from drive its like you have the brake on,.. but not always is this some sensor or the module on the tranny ? also when you put it in nuetral the rpms go up to about 2200 rpms? sometimes it works fine but still wont go in reverse from drive. i have replaced the high speed input or out put sensor and the lowspeed input and output sensor and i also replaced cam sensor. before i did all of these it wouldn't hardly run (real spuratic as far as rpms) Now it runs fine on the highway.. Please help Thanks Todd

take the vehicle to a repair shop and have them look at the electrical connectors and make sure that they are tight and that you don't have what they call a terminal pin push out causing this intermittent problem. there are too many things that could be causing your problem to mention.

Another s80 t6 Question. AM reception?
I can't get AM reception on my volvo s80 t6 radio, FM is not much better. Apparently this is a problem with the antenna being part of the rear window? Any tips on solving this one?

5 honda stock tires/rims?
i was wondering how much i should sell my honda stock tires/rims. i have 5 extra ones. still in good condition. how much should i sell them for on craigslist?

I've always paid no more than $200 for a set of four as long as the tires are in ok condition. It also depends on what rim it is. If they are SI wheels than I wouldn't pay more than $200 for 4. If they are just the black steelies then I would pay $100 for 4. The only stock rim I would pay more than $200 for is the GSR blade.

SMG transmission?
I've been driving manual cars ever since I got my license. I'm now considering getting an e46 M3, either in a 6 speed manual or SMG,(most likely an 01).
Could someone explain the disadvantages of having an SMG transmission? I've heard that they are not good when driving slowly, and that they are hard to park...
Also, how do you start moving, (do you have to hold the paddle in while giving it gas?), or start off going up a hill, (with no clutch, can you even stall it out?)
