Is porsche 944 a gray market car %26amp; what is a gray market car " do they have a us version"?
Where in the world are you?

If it is US then the 944 is 100% legal. I know a few people with them.

prior to about 1984 a lot of European cars came to this country and weren't set up for our strict emission requirements. those cars we called gray market cars and there are still a few imported in today. gray market means they had to be retrofited to fit our laws. your car may fit into this catergory.
Reply:If you live in the U.S., you should have seen many of them by now.

They were sold in the U.S. for over 5 years until they went out of production.

I see one every couple of months driving around.

You can buy them anywhere. They now cost around $5000-7000 on autorader.com and vehix.com and cars.com
Reply:Most Porsche cars, including the 944, have been produced in two major variations... US, and RoW (Rest Of the World). The US cars have heavier bumpers, are generally set to higher ride heights, and usually have engines that produce a little less power (generally due to emissions requirements). And due to crash testing requirements, some of the most desirable Porsche models were never made in US trim by the factory (964 RS, Original GT3, 959, etc).

A grey market car is one that was imported from elsewhere in the world, and then brought up to US standards. If done properly, these can be very desirable cars as they often have options and additional performance compared to US versions... but that is a VERY big IF as most that were imported were done by people looking to make a quick buck. A car that was not brought up to standards correctly will at best be a major and costly headache, and at worst, will have major safety issues.

However, the 944 was most definitely produced in a US version. If you are in the United States, pretty much all 944s you will find will be US versions... and the few grey market cars will also be road legal in the US. If you are in another country, you will only have the RoW version, but this would be the version that would be legal in that country.
