I have a 1997 chevy silverado the check engine is on and it shakes a lot why?
I couldn't say why the CEL is on- you can usually get that checked at a local autozone for free. But the engine is probably shaking due to a loose or broken engine mount.

Reply:the engine is most likely misfiring something isn' working as it should you need to have someone hook a scanner to the truck to see what code is store in the engines computer to find out whats wrong. auto zone parts store will tell you what the code is but thats it. A garage or dealerhship will be able to tell you whats malfuntioning
Reply:If you would be willing to type a better description and do the leg work to get the engine code which has the CEL on then I could give you a better answer. There are too many things it could possibly be without first knowing why the light is on. Go to Autozone as was said and find out the code number and its description and ask again ... or you could ask me directly once you know.
Reply:shaking? or quivering, if it's an irregular quiver then you have some cylinders that aren't firing. or perhaps it's detonation, i'd say it's time for a major tune up.
