What is the mpg for a 1970 vw bug?

I am restoring one and i got 17 mpg but i think that the carborator needs adjustment what should be the mpg

It depends what engine it has. (In 38 years, a lot of stuff can be done to a car) But expect mid-20s to low-30s.

17 mpg is a little low for a stock 1600, expect 20-22 up to 25 if it is perfect, i dont know where the other guy got his numbers, but you will Never see 30 MPG from a carburetted vw


try and lean out the carb a little, but don't over do it, timing can also play a huge role in your mpg's


try timing by vacuum.
Reply:17 is low unless your engine is not stock. if its a 1500 cc stock mpg should be 23-24. stock 1600 single port is 21-24. stock 1600 cc dual port should be 24-27. it only takes a small change, such as aftermarket exhaust, to lower the mpg this much. check your timing also, may cause 2 mpg difference.
