I have a bad fuel tank? Have you ever experienced a similar problem? Please share your experience. Thank you?

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy with over 87000 miles on it. My car sat died for 2 days; it won't start. The next morning, it suddenly started and i drove back and forth to work with no problems. After work, i went home, took a shower, and decided to bring the SUV to a shop to have it look by a technician. Now, it won't start! I applied starting fluid but my car would start and stay on for merely 2 to 3 seconds. I did this 50 times with no success. Finally, i have it towed, and the shop is now asking me to pay over 700 dollars for a new fuel pump and relay inlcluding labor. I was like "allright, go ahead and fixed it, hang up, and think of something of how the hell could i afford it".

Do you routinely drive with less than 1/4 tank of gas? This will cause a pump to fail. The gas cools the pump.

Labor time is 2.4 hours. So figure $200 labor.

The part can be had for $300.

I am not sure where the other $200 is coming from.

....oh wait...relay...you don't need both...you either need the pump (most likely I replace a few GM/Chevy pumps a week) or the relay. No reason you need both.
Reply:It does sound like a bad fuel pump and the price does seem a bit high. BTW...You either SAID, "go ahead and fix it" or you didn't say it but you didn't say i WAS......... %26lt;%26lt;%26lt; like %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; .............
Reply:I had this problem once. There's a wire in the fuel tank that was corroded; it measures the amount of fuel. When there was 1/2 a tank of gas, the wire dried out and told it that the tank was empty. Full tank of gas--started every time. 1/2 a tank--not a chance. It was very difficult to locate the problem because when it was towed, the gas slopped around and made the wire wet--and the vehicle would start.
