I have a 1999 VW Passat. It was totaled the other day. How do I find out what my car is worth? Kelly Book states that a car in excellent condition is worth approx. $8,000. I do not owe any money on the car, it is paid off.

If KBB says its worth $8,000 thats about it. Thats what insurace companies rely on to value vehicles.

Reply:insurance companies will also look for the going rates of that car in your area by checking autotrader or similar.

Reply:the body shop would have done an estimate on the repairs for this vehicle, that number is what an insurance company will look at to determine if it is totaled, depending on your insurance company, it is usually 85% of the msrp according to kbb, if you can get the cost to repair from the body shop, it will give you an idea of what it will take to return it to good condition, typically you will be able to get kbb fair value minus 75% of that estimate, just a ball park figure. it also is affected by where the damage is and what is salvageable, what part of the country are you in, i may be interested in working out a deal with you, please email me
